Sharpless 86

Sh2-86 is an emission nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, intertwined with the open cluster NGC 6823, which lies about 6,170 light-years away, and reaches its annual culmination at astronomical midnight and is best observed mid July.

Sh2-86, also cataloged as LBN 135, is a faint emission nebula in Vulpecula that rewards patient deep-sky imagers working under dark skies with long integration times. Embedded within the same region of sky lies NGC 6820, a separate emission nebula, while the young open cluster NGC 6823 shines at magnitude 7.1 mag and acts as the energetic engine illuminating the surrounding gas. Although these objects appear as a single sprawling target in a wide-field photograph, the astronomical catalogs list them as distinct, independent entries, each carrying its own designation.
