The databases at a glance
AstroQuery queries several astronomical data sources — each with its own strengths. The same object designation can be looked up in any of them; the results complement one another. Which source is meant for what:
Forgiving name resolution
Spelling does not matter. With or without spaces, abbreviation or spelled-out catalogue name — AstroQuery finds the same object. So M31 and M 31, Sh2-131 and Sharpless 131, C 25 and Caldwell 25, Mel 20 and Melotte 20 each reach the same entry. Proper names such as "Andromeda" are recognised too. Recognised long forms include Sharpless, Melotte, Collinder, Barnard, van den Bergh, Caldwell and Wolf-Rayet.
