Venus – the Morning and Evening Star

Venus is one of the most striking targets in planetary astrophotography and can be seen as either the Morning Star or the Evening Star, depending on its position in its orbit.

Venus is one of the brightest and most fascinating planets for astrophotography. Depending on its position in its orbit, it appears either in the morning sky before sunrise or in the evening sky after sunset. As the Morning Star or Evening Star, it is already a striking object to the naked eye.

For astrophotography, Venus is particularly interesting because of its changing phases. Since its surface is hidden beneath a dense layer of clouds, no surface structures are visible in ordinary visible-light images. Venus becomes especially interesting when photographed in ultraviolet light, where different structures in the upper cloud layers can become visible.
